COURSE PROJECT: Play-Learn——History of Money

Beginning

The starting project of the 3rd year, I chose 'Play-Learn', the first session of this project was group work. Our group's theme is The History of Money.

Our group's main focus on money was ''collage" in the process of making the banknote. So we decided to design an activity that audiences can take part in and have their own experience to learn the banknote collage process.

After a lot of research, we've come up with a basic template, idea for the activity.
step 1:
Participants will be given a multiple of objects of "value", maybe sweets wrapped in gold foil/fools gold/other.
step 2:
The Participants then changes these sweets for a blank, currency sized, piece of paper, representing paper money
step 3:
They then get to design their own currency by stamping pre-made stamps/linocuts cutouts that we've made, representing how paper money was once made from collage
step 4:
The note that they've made is stamped with our "official" stamp/seal to make it look official and money-like, representing the minting process
Step 5:
The participant then has the option to trade back the note they've made for sweets. However, the note can only get them a fraction of ta number of sweets they had at the beginning, representing inflation.
They can choose to keep the note they've made or the sweets = the incentive

Darryl liked the idea but suggested we need to add an element of surprise, or an element of risk, or the possibility of something going wrong, or make it less linear etc.

Research
British Museum: Money Collection

What a coincidence that I went to the currency collection at British Museum last year for the "London Experience" competition in London Business School. My theme was also about money so the research might be also useful for this project.

In my previous work for the 'LBS' project, I did some drawings about the border of the banknote. So I did some research about the banknote's border around the world.

My Work:
Border Design

So, as for the previous work, the banknote work in "LBS", I was pleased to do the border job of the banknote in our group this time, I've seen lots of banknote of all over the world, and these patterns and borders are really beautiful. I tried to capture the element inside, drew that down, and used photoshop to edit.

I looked up the pattern and the layout on currency from the different countries then chose some of these pattern to recombine and made these 4 designs of the border.

Making Process

Another member of our group, Yoyo drew the beautiful portraits of the banknote. It was actually a quite funny idea from our discussion, that we decided to put our tutors, the leaders from 1-3 year of illustration major, as the portrait on the banknote so that people can choose the tutor on their banknote.

Other members' works. Yasha made the 'pattern' that participants can choose for their own banknote collaging. And we began to print, cut and stick. Lizzie bought the golden paper and sweets so we can wrap them to represent the objects of 'value'.

Final Activity Day!

I was in charge of the 'Polling Station', to gather people's vote of their favourite tutor.

That's the end of the activity, though we still have lots of steps inside of the activity need to be improved.

We are all satisfied with our produce, the banknote, and the cooperation, as working together made us learn from each other.
